I built this block to celebrate Cynthia Solomon, a woman who embodies FemEdTech and who has spent a lifetime in computer science education.
I liked playing with the words logo and icon, Logo being the programming language Cynthia helped pioneer. The ‘circle of hearts’ is a design is one of Cynthia’s, programmed in Turtlestitch [which is Andrea Mayr-Stalder’s Logo and Snap! based language which offers users the delight of combining computer programming with a haptic output via thread and needle].
The swimming turtles are there for pure joy.
The red swatch offered itself into this quilt square – it was already pinked into a circle and sitting with a sewing machine that came to me from my late mother Angela, whose creative use of this technology was an unconscious constant of my youth.
